Ah, Valentine's Day! I always liked Valentine's Day growing up. Even if I didn't have a significant other I spent the day showing my friends and family how much I appreciated and loved them by giving them small gifts like cupcakes and candies. Who says that Valentine's Day only has to be for couples? When I did have a boyfriend, or later my husband, I insisted on keeping the day low-keyed and sweet. No big ticket items like jewelry; instead I wanted to spend the day doing something fun like going to a museum or zoo, grabbing a couple of slices of pizza, and exchanging books, music or candies.
Yesterday was my six hour teaching day, followed by dinner with Ed. We had planned to see The Artist afterwards but were too tired to hang around for the 8:00 movie to start. Yeah I know, we're old farts. Tuesday is just one of THOSE days for me: teaching is performing and it takes a lot out of me.
Anyway, I wanted to wear something festive, yet work appropriate ... and I really didn't want to look like a cheese ball like so many other people I saw yesterday. I wore a new black and red dress from DressBarn. The fabric is synthetic (rayon mix) and is printed with roses in reverse, meaning the red is the outline of the black rose. Over the surface are clear sequins that pick up the light, giving the whole dress an overall shine. The top, which you can't see, is more of a halter top style. I'll be honest, I didn't have the correct bra for this dress so I hide the straps under my fuzzy bolero. Finally, I wore my kitten heels and opaque stockings. All in all, Ed and I had a nice quiet dinner in the West Village followed by a very slow walk to the subway. It was a perfect Valentine's evening: quiet, cuddly and low-keyed.

Beautiful dress! I agree with you on the way to celebrate this day. As my man arrived at home late, he invited me for a dinner this night instead. I got curious of how those cheese balls you are describing look like ;). We don't dress in anything particular for this day were I live. Is it lots of red dressed people perhaps?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Actually here in NYC there really wasn't a lot of red dresses at all. However, there was a lot of crazy headbands with bouncy hearts on them, over the top heart sweaters, etc. I did see a very classy couple who were dressed to go out, probably to an expensive restaurant: he was in a black suit, black shirt and a black tie that had red and pink hearts all over it; she was in a gorgeous, tight black dress accessorized with a red cincher belt and red heels. They looked fabulous!
DeleteYou look romantic, yet professional! Boleros and shrugs are so perfect for hiding inappropriate straps at work. I love the bits of shine, and that print!! I wore a red rose print on black yesterday too, but got home late and didn't take photos. :(
ReplyDeleteI agree about the low-key V-Day (although we did go out to dinner, but at a small local place: not a big Restaurant Row chain where people waited 2 hrs for tables to eat mediocre food!). I forbid Mr. Kitty to buy expensive things on that day, too (and Christmas). I'd rather be spoiled on days that are special to us (birthdays and anniversaries) than days that corporate America dictates should be special to us. ;) True romance is NOT about paying $100 or more for a dozen roses just to prove something...
Thanks! Roses too? Yet another example of how great minds think alike. ;)
DeleteWe went to one of our "go to" restaurants in Manhattan: Suzie's Chinese Restaurant. We didn't get to go there for Chinese New Year, so this was the next best thing. The owner is SO cool and friendly! Yule is pretty big in our house because we love it so much. It's a good mix between serious gifts and fun, silly things ... and there's always a theme, which makes the buying and giving fun. Birthdays and anniversaries are super special too.
Agreed! True romance can be bumping into each other on the dance floor in the middle of an Industrial set and winking at each other as you stomp away. hehehe ... story of my life.
I was the cheeseball. Magenta long sleeves, pink tiedyed work shirt, magenta striped socks, aggressively magenta lippy, pink sparkly nails, and a pink glittery heart sticker stuck on my coat. My pants were the only unfestive thing about it.
ReplyDeleteAw, I bet you were an adorable cheeseball!
DeleteLove this dress. Very 1920's. Happy V Day. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks lady! (((HUGS))) to you!
ReplyDeletehaha my mom stared at your dress in a very jealous way (she loves everything with roses on it ^^) and i have to say it really is a pretty one! and you have matching nail polish, too!
ReplyDelete:) Thanks! (and tell your Mom thanks!)
