Yesterday I went to my Mom's to take down her holiday stuff, which means I dressed to work. I thought about the outfit in my post Breathing and Working -- yoga pants and a t-shirt -- and decided to take on the challenge of how to make such a casual outfit a bit more refined. I'll probably be living in such outfits while I write this dissertation, at least at home, and therefore I wonder if there is a way to make them more polished. I've gotten into a bad habit of working in my pajamas for most of the morning, forgoing a shower until well into the afternoon. I really need to switch this around and prepare for the day first thing in the morning.
I am wearing a very loose pair of yoga pants and one of my black, long-sleeved cotton blouses with the ruffled bib. Over that I am wearing a loose sweater that has ruffles all the way around the edges and hems. The shoes are simply the Target shoes that I DIYed in the summer and which I seem to wear all the time for a quick run here or there. I'm not sure if I was all that successful in refining casual, perhaps a little? There's something about the way everything is so "shlumpy" that I can't get around. Maybe it's just that I really can't stand this level of casualness when going out? Thankfully I was only going to Mom's, which is like staying home. What can I say, even professors are lazy in January! :)
Bat Fit Update: When I went to my Mom's yesterday I decided to weigh myself. Much to my surprise and happiness I lost 5 pounds! I know that it doesn't seem like a lot and that it's probably water weight, but was I surprised to see the numbers drop. And let me tell you, there's no better motivation than seeing results.
Stay tuned for another Bat Fit challenge which will be posted on Monday, January 16th. What could it be?
The Run Down:
Pants: Champion, bought at Target
Blouse: Lane Bryant
Shoes: Target, DIYed by me
Sweater: Macy's

My 'home clothes' look pretty similar! All black, with a long sweater-cardigan with ruffles all the way around. Then I wear a long-sleeve knit dress and wool stockings (super warm and comfy, thick ones).
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 5 pounds!
Have you checked out green smoothies as a way to lose weight? I'm a huge fan; they are super filling so you can replace a meal with one, then because they are so nutritious they give your body what it needs and you crave less shit food! I lost 3 kilos last summer and plan to lose more that way when I get back to Australia.
Hexotica: hehehehe ... I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one. And thank you! I did the smoothie thing the last time I lost all the weight, but unfortunately I can't keep it up. I'm technically not on a diet, but rather on a change of lifestyle -- smaller portions of whole foods. My problem isn't the type of food but rather the amount of food. I cook so I control what I eat ... the portions are my enemy. hehehehe ...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your lost weight. I lost 2 pound this week. I have to do some more exercise I think. I love the sweater you are wearing it looks warm and comfy.
ReplyDeletelinnea-maria: Thanks and congrats to you! I have to admit, I'm a sucker for sweaters because they are so warm and comfy. :)
ReplyDeleteFive pounds is a BIG deal and you should celebrate it! Every pound lost is an achievement. After the birth of my second child I did Weight Watchers and lost 30lbs. I loved going in for weigh in's because even if I only lost .05lbs there was a celebration for it. Weight loss and health is a hard journey and we have to remind ourselves that it took years to get that way.... it will take a while to get out. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI have to say I love that shade of lipstick!!I should "refine casual" too ^^ 'cause I have the BAD habit to always work in my pj when I'm home :/. Thank God I'll have to be four/five days a week in University from here since August, but still, I should do something about it!Yay for Bat Fit, it seems to really work so far: congrats :-)!
ReplyDeleteCongratulation on those 5 pounds! ^^ I'm still trying to catch up with the challenges, however I do dance at home...^^
ReplyDeleteActually, I'm pretty proud of myself too, I probably haven't lost any, but I didn't gain weight during the holidays...:)
I agree with Hexotica's tip, the smoothies help a lot!
congrats on losing 5 pounds, every single pound is important :-D
ReplyDeleteLady Bethezda: Thanks! Yes, it's a complete celebration. I weighed myself last night and noticed that I was a few pounds less than the last weigh in. And here's the kicker -- I haven't been this weight in almost 5 years! WAHOO!
ReplyDeleteMariaLuisa: Thanks! I'm still trying to figure out to make casual look presentable in University settings. Perhaps I should just stick to fabrics that move with me like travel knit/liquid knit? If you have any ideas please share them with me. I'm usually extremes: dressed very well/to the 9s or super casual. sigh ...
Lynoire: Aw, thanks! Are you finding the challenges good so far? What would you add? I truly love the dancing part of my workout, especially if I'm in a bad mood during the day. It really brings me up and makes me smile.
kakuidori: Thanks darling!
