Monthly Homework Assignment: Snow and Ice 20s Style!

Snow and ice, no two words can send shivers run up and down one's spine quite like those two. Brrrr! Pure, gorgeous white snow mixed with silvery, clear or even sometimes blue ice make for a striking and gorgeous image, and which can be quite inspirational in terms of fashion and make-up. While I don't have a single piece of white clothing -- seriously, I don't -- I *do*, however, have a ton of white, silver and sparkly make-up.

In addition, I started to play with the meanings of snow and ice. It dawned on me that diamonds were once called "ice" in slang. Well hey now! Snow and Ice = Pearls and Diamonds!!! Of course, any good Flapper can tell you that diamonds are a gal's best friend! And any Flapper wouldn't be caught dead without her deliciously long string of pearls! And boy! do I have a lot to chose from in my jewelry wardrobe because pearls are my most favorite things in the world. Heck, pair them with diamonds and WAHOO! You got me at hello! ;)

So, without further ado, I give you Snow and Ice = Diamonds and Pearls 20s Style.

Boop-boop-a-do!
Once I started to think in terms of a "20s Flapper Gal" I was inspired to put this top and skirt together. Both have a very 20s feel one their own, but when put together they really look like a 20s drop waist dress. This is because the fabric of the top layer of the skirt and the that of the under layer of the shirt are made from exactly the same material. It's a gossamer chiffon that is extremely light and flowing. The over shirt is a lace and crochet concoction of deliciousness. The skirt has a handkerchief hem and billows out with the slightest breeze. I decided to pair this outfit with my brand new shoes with the pearl detailing from DSW.

While I do have lots and lots of pearls in my jewelry wardrobe thanks to my loved ones (they know to get me "anything pearl" for special gifts) I have very limited amounts of real diamonds. My anniversary bands and those in my engagement ring, three pairs of earrings, my nose ring, and a couple of heirlooms from my Granny and that's it. However, I do have lots of rhinestones, which will stand in for icy diamonds in a snap. You've seen this rhinestone headband before; I love silver and rhinestone hair accessories against black hair -- they really pop and shine!

As you can see from the above two photos I kept my makeup icy cold with white sparkly liner, silver shimmer eyeshadow and silver sparkle eyeshadow. I lined my upper lids and eyebrows with black liquid liner. Fake eyelashes with rhinestone details in the outer lashes and red lipstick completed the look.

I even painted my nails white and then used silver crackle to mimic the look of snow and ice on my fingertips!

I am wearing two strands of pearls -- one approximately 26 inches long and the other LOT OF FEET long. Both strands are freshwater, white pearls. Yes, freshwater! I only have a few pieces that are actually saltwater pearls because they are very expensive. I've been buying freshwater pearls for a number of years, as does my mother-in-law when she buys gifts for me. Both of these strands are from her. The earrings are my Grandma's on my Mom's side. I really don't know if they are real or not ... I suspect they aren't because my Granny wore a lot of costume jewelry. They are "pearls" set in silver and surrounded by "diamond" baguettes. The shiny thing in the above photo is my headband.

Diamonds and pearls ... my favorite kind of snow and ice! ;)

The Run Down:
Skirt: Macy's
Blouse: OneStopPlus.com
Stockings: Target
Shoes: DSW
Headband: Claire's
Pearl Necklaces: Gift's from my mom-in-law
Earrings: They were my Grandma's.

  11. Lynoire: Aw, thank you! I really love that crackle polish. Just remember to put a top coat over it because it's not really proper nail polish and needs to be "set."

Hexotica: Thanks! Oooo, have fun! I was reading your posts about being a gypsy and traveling. When I was in my 20s I would have given anything to have a job that allowed me to travel. And then I settled in with Ed, started to take care of my Mom, and planted a garden. Now I want a nice Dutch farmhouse along the Hudson River and a huge garden. hehehehe ...

    Snowhyte: Thanks! Me too!

kakuidori: Aw, you're never too late. I'm one of those professors that will take late homework, but don't tell my students. shhhh .... Snow White? Wow, thanks! Hmmmm ... you just gave me an idea for a homework assignment. Thanks.

Ms. Lou: Thank you. Drinking chocolate is one of my favorite things when it gets cold, so I'm looking forward to reading your post.

  15. You look amazing! I love 20s style but can never pull it off. My attempt at making a flapper-esque headpiece for an event last month went...somewhere else ha.

I finally summoned the energy for a post. The unveiling of Thing on Head:
