Home Stretch Teaching

Le Professeur Gothique starting the last bit of teaching for the semester
WAHOO! We are in the home stretch! I only have one more class to teach at Parsons and three more at CSI. I need to grade their papers, administer and grade their finals, figure out their final grades and VOILA! I'm done until the end of January. I am really looking forward to January's break. I have a lot of things that I want to accomplish like cleaning my office, organizing my dissertation research better, spending more time in the library, etc. I also really want to take a breath and create some art, perhaps do a painting or two. And I want to start planning out my garden. Yes, I said garden. I have to make a cold frame for my early spring leafy greens and I want to see if I can get my hands on some heirloom varieties of vegetables. I also need to get my hands on an apple tree -- I want to plant one in the middle of my Mom's yard. Anyone here in the USA have a good resource for heirloom vegetable seeds?

Yesterday I wore a grey and black leopard print wrap skirt topped by a ruffled, sparkly blouse and my trusty black pinwale blazer that I've been living in all semester. Black, opaque tights, loafers and a sparkly knit scarf completed the look. I was very lazy yesterday with my hair and makeup so I kept everything polished and simple, using black eyeshadow as liner and pulling my hair up.

We're coving the 19th century in my CSI classes and I can't be more thrilled. I LOVE teaching this time period because it's what I study. I love talking about Courbet and Manet and how they purposefully drew attention to the two dimensionality of the canvas surface, making the viewer aware of the fact that they are looking at paint on a flat surface instead of through a "picture window." It blows my students' minds every time. :)

  1. Great outfit!
Love the shoes. Wish I could walk in a pair of these but with my narrow heel and my wide toes - no chance! :(

  2. I often get heirloom seed catalogs sent to me c/o Yahoo! Green -- I could forward them to you, if you like! I have the blackest of black thumbs, all plants die near me, so I usually recycle the catalogs ;-) Email me via the link on trystancraft.com. The catalogs start arriving in January.

  3. Love the blouse. It adds the right amount of "bling" to the outfit without making it look silly with the leopard print skirt. :)

  4. Yay for the home stretch! Yay for fun, interesting work outfits!
I am a killer of plants, but I have some friends who are big gardeners and swear by Seed Savers and, for a more north-east local focus, Amishland Heirloom: http://amishlandseeds.com/

  5. Pinwale... Is that what it's called? I had no idea! Thank you. :) I love this combination!!! The blazer adds a mature twist to the leopard skirt, and the scarf is the perfect bit of sparkle. You look deviously excited about that upcoming break... ;-D

I'm all about the desert landscaping, so I can't help on the seeds. Would LOVE to do a vegetable garden, but my time is already stretched beyond the comfortable limits. I will sit here seething with envy every time you post about yours!!! ;)

  6. I forgot the magazine articles, but my mum often orders them from various catalogues. Like, the real deal, coming from local farmers or families that own an organic farm. She has also bought large, juicy, colorful heirlooms from the farmer's market (during the spring, summer, and early august). I love heirloom tomatoes -- a shame hardly anyone I know has heard of them!

And I really dig your blazers ^_^

Sabayon beat me to metioning http://www.seedsavers.org/, but the husband and I tend to buy small plants more than seeds, as we have a small army of voracious squirrels on our property who leave us very little. Gardening is one of our two seasons, Halloween being the other (November through March is simply "down time"). We used to buy from a local company (Harris), until we found out they were bought out like so many other long standing companies. :(

  8. Sal: Thanks!

Trystan: AWESOME! I will definitely email you ASAP! Thanks so much.

Unlacing the Victorians: Thank you! Yes, leopard print is often hard to glam up without it being tacky. :)

Sabayon: Yay indeed!!! Thanks for the link.

Ms. Kitty: Yes, it's called pinwale, pincord or needlecord. Oh, I am SOOO excited about this upcoming break. I'm like a little kid counting the days to Santa!!! Well, I guess technically I am. hehehehe .... The 21st can not come fast enough!

Tenebris: Thanks! I love heirlooms!!! I'm itching to get my mitts on an heirloom apple tree.

Minakitty: Are you dreaming of your garden already? I certainly am! I have a stack of drawings and plans everywhere. I think gardening keeps us sane through the dark and cold winter months. :) I wonder if my green market has small plants. hmmm ... I'll have to check it out. Thanks.

  9. Great outfit, and congrats on the homestretch.
I am going to try @Minnakitty's and @Sabayon's advice and order some seeds from seedsavers. I had little luck with heirlooms this year. But maybe this will do the trick.
