| Le Professeur Gothique off to do some food shopping. Good grief! I have to cut my bangs!!! |
I actually made a very monumental decision this past weekend: for the first time in over 16 years I will not be making holiday cookies for my family. I took a good, long look at what stresses me out over the holidays and what activities I hate doing. Surprisingly, cookie baking was top on that list. Don't get me wrong, I love to cook and bake but not like that. I originally started baking the cookies because I wanted to continue my Mom's tradition. However, at 39 I'm still baking the cookies out of guilt that the tradition will end with me. For the first time in my adult life I have decided to do what's good for me and break with tradition. It feels weird, but it's about time I do what I want and not what's expected.
I spent most of my days in pjs because I was grading; however I got dressed to do some shopping in the evenings. Yesterday I wore a long, double slit velvet skirt, my London After Midnight t-shirt, topped with my trusty cardigan. Since it's so close to the holidays I wore crystal snowflake hair clips and my crystal snowflake earrings ... of course I paired them with my crystal skull earrings in my second holes and my antler death's head.

It's finally cold here on NYC! WAHOO! I have to admit, I love this weather. I love the layering and outerwear options and I get to wear my fun DIY Jack O'Lantern scarf. I can't wait until it's cold enough to wear my fuzzy coats and my silly wool hat! YAY!

GOOD FOR YOU!!! Sometimes the whole "tradition for the sake of tradition" needs to be shaken up a bit. :) I took some time last year to evaluate what stressed me out most about the holidays, and found it to be over-thinking what people would like for gifts. So I suggested that the whole family create Amazon wish lists, which has made the last two years WORLDS easier on us. We don't always adhere exactly to the list, but at least it gives us all an idea what everyone is currently "into". Especially helpful for long-distance family!
ReplyDeleteWith that scarf, you are definitely ready for super-cold weather. You New York girls really know how to stay warm while looking great! :-D
Tradition can be comforting, but it can also become a heavy burden if you let it. Bravo for doing what's best for you!
ReplyDeleteVictorianKitty: I hear you about the tradition thing! Can you imagine that I made huge batches of cookies last year after passing my orals on the 17th? I was so fried by the time Yule and Christmas came that I couldn't even enjoy them. Nope, not this year. It's my holiday, too, and I plan on enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks! I'm going to do a tutorial on the scarf soon ... hell, it might even be video if I can figure it out ... so stay tuned.
Bane: Thanks! There are certain traditions that I'll keep because it reminds me of special people. Cookies should be one of them, but instead they've become expected of me. In some ways I'm rebelling this year. :)
